What is DVS and does my lorry need a Safe System?

If you run lorries into London, you'll need to know about the Direct Vision Standard (DVS). Here's what it is, which vehicles it applies to and what you need to do.

What is the Direct Vision Standard?

DVS is a Transport for London scheme that rates how much a driver can see directly from the cab of an HGV, from zero stars (poor) to five stars (excellent). The rating comes from the vehicle manufacturer and is linked to the vehicle's VIN.

Which vehicles need a permit?

Lorries over 12 tonnes gross vehicle weight need a valid HGV Safety Permit to enter or operate in Greater London. The permit itself is free to apply for.

What changed in October 2024?

Since 28 October 2024, vehicles need at least a three-star DVS rating to get a permit. Vehicles rated zero, one or two stars must have the Progressive Safe System fitted instead.

What's in the Progressive Safe System?

According to TfL, the Progressive Safe System includes:

  • A nearside camera monitoring system to cover the remaining blind spot
  • Front and nearside mirrors (or cameras that replace them)
  • A blind spot information system that detects pedestrians and cyclists down the nearside
  • A moving off information system at the front of the vehicle
  • Audible warnings when the vehicle turns left
  • Side under-run protection
  • External warning signage

What happens without a permit?

Driving an HGV over 12 tonnes in Greater London without a valid permit can lead to a penalty charge notice of up to £550.

How we can help

We supply and fit a complete DVS kit for £1,200 + VAT:

  • 3 AI cameras with pedestrian and cyclist detection (front, nearside low and nearside high)
  • In-cab monitor
  • Turn alarm with left, right and reverse warnings
  • Blind spot warning sticker

That covers the camera, detection, audible warning and signage parts of the Safe System. Most lorries already have the required mirrors and side under-run protection, and we'll check yours when we quote. Mobile fitting is available at your yard or depot across the Midlands, with fleet work nationwide.
