Do I need a Thatcham-approved alarm or tracker for my insurance?

It's common for an insurer to ask for a Thatcham-approved alarm, immobiliser or tracker before they'll cover a vehicle, especially for vans, high-value cars, motorhomes and vehicles parked in higher-risk areas. Here's what that means and how to get it right first time.

What does Thatcham-approved mean?

Thatcham Research tests vehicle security products on behalf of the UK insurance industry. Products that pass are given an approved category, so insurers can ask for a known standard of protection rather than just "an alarm" or "a tracker".

Why do insurers ask for it?

Approved security makes a vehicle harder to steal and easier to recover. Some insurers make it a condition of cover; others offer a lower premium if you fit it. Either way, the requirement is set by your insurer, not by the installer.

How to find out what you need

  • Check your policy schedule or endorsements. Look for wording like "Thatcham Category", "S5", "S7" or "approved tracking device".
  • Ask your insurer or broker exactly which category they accept, and whether a fitting certificate is needed.
  • Ask about deadlines. Some policies give you a set number of days to get the device fitted.

Alarms, immobilisers or trackers?

Alarms and immobilisers help stop a theft happening. Trackers help get the vehicle back if it is taken. Many insurers ask for one or the other; some ask for both. Telling us the exact wording from your insurer is the quickest way for us to recommend the right system.

If you need a tracker, our guide to S5 vs S7 trackers explains the difference.
